The Tailor

The project "Tailor" reflects the story of my mom and the first flag of Georgia. The flag that was gifted to my dad was remodelled by mom first as a dress and then as a bag for carrying the products- That’s how purely national symbol has become a daily use item. “The flag that denoted our freedom and greatness I perceived as a simple cloth that could cover my body. That was a disappointment. I have sewed the dress. Then, gradually with the deterioration of the situation, this dress turned into a bag for carrying products by which I was feeding my entire family. "-my mom says.

Flag, dress and bag – Maia Sukhashvili

1990

Your dad brought the flag in 1990. This flag was personal gift from Zviad Gamsakhurdia, until he became the president. It was said that burgundy colour was the symbol of Georgians blood, but however only black and white left- war, pain, loss of people, ethnic conflicts.
For us, as the family of the internationalists who are constantly visited by friends of different nationalities and religions - Ossetians, Russians, Chechens, Azeris, Ingushetians, Armenians and many more, this flag did not really bring anything good for us, besides the mocking from the nationalists.

1993

I always used to sew my clothes by myself. I also worked at a factory for a while, until I got married. When the wars started, everything became harder to find, including clothes. At that time I already had my first kid and I was very thin, now I’m no longer on good shape. There were no jobs, I was unemployed. While your dad went to Abkhazia war, he did not return for several months. I was forced to sew dress from the flag but at the same time I was thinking how others would perceive it. To be honest I was afraid that people tell me that I would not have done it and it would made me feel ashamed. Once I took you to doctor, I was wearing this dress, it was cold day and doctor asked me-don’t you have anything else to wear? I said nothing- I did not know he recognized the flag cloth or she mocked me because of the weather inappropriate clothes. I could not even respond that I did not have any other dress and I have sewed it from the flag, I thought she could get angry because of that.
When dad arrived and saw the dress, how can I say… he did not say anything but I could guess that he was a little bit offended, he did not say anything, as he also knew that our family did not have any other opportunity or choice to make.

1996

The hardship strengthened after having my second kid, he was born with two congenital diseases. For our survival staying at home was not enough, I was forced to leave village, bring and sell fruits and other products in Tbilisi. That was the way how I earned money for bread and medications. As I did not have a big bag, I thought because this dress had durable cloth it still could do something for me… I have remodelled it for products bag and I was going to so called “Dezerter Bazaar” with it.
